This first book in the Jazz Tremaine series by Linda Wisdom has sat on my TBR pile since it first came out in 2008 and again, it was the quirky cover art that originally drew my attention. What can I say, I’m a book magpie…flashy/showy covers get my attention. The cover art is somewhat misleading though, there's no cat in the story or a coffin for that matter either. After finishing the book yesterday, I was sorry I’d waiting so long to read it. Words I’d use to describe this series: fun, cute, whimsical and light.
If you’re looking for something darker along the same lines as Kim Harrison or Laurell K. Hamilton, you might not care for this series. The closest I can come to comparing this series with another would be Michele Bardsley’s Broken Heart series.
700 years ago as a young witch-in-training, Jazz Tremaine and a group of her sister witches are banished into our world to atone for playing a rather severe prank on a member of royalty. Over the years Jazz has done many things to make a living but in the year 2007 (when this novel takes place), Jazz is making her living as a curse eliminator and a limousine driver for an agency that caters to the town’s supernatural population. Jazz’s on-again/off-again hunky (of course… are there any other kind?) vampire boyfriend, Nick shows up in town after a 30 year hiatus and asks for her help trying to figure out why vampires are suddenly going missing all over town. When it becomes apparent that the former 1930’s film star, Clive Reeves might be the vampire killer, you begin to wonder if Jazz and Nick will be able to take on her arch nemesis or will they kill each other first. This review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Irma, the ghost that haunts Jazz’s 1956 Thunderbird. Even though Jazz continually gripes about Irma’s presence, she’s very glad for her when the shit hits the fan during the book’s climatic ending.
